IN THE CAUSE OF ALLAH .. FI SABILILLAH ..
This is an authentic and profoundly rewarding Hadith recorded in several major collections, including Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim.
It highlights the high status of charity and social responsibility in Islam.
The Hadith Text
Narrated by Abu Hurairah (May Allah be pleased with him), the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:
"The one who looks after a widow or a poor person is like a Mujahid (warrior) who fights for Allah's Cause, or like him who performs prayers all the night and fasts all the day."
Equal Reward to Worship:
Caring for and financially or emotionally supporting the vulnerable is equated to the immense reward of (Jihad) (striving in the path of Allah).
Equal to Constant Prayer and Fasting: The physical and spiritual exertion involved in helping those in need is compared to spending every single night in voluntary prayer (Qiyam) and every day in fasting (Sawm).
The Importance of Effort:
The Arabic word used is as-sa'ee (الساعي), which translates to "the one who strives" or "works for."
It signifies active effort, running errands, and providing continuous care rather than just a one-time charity.
In Islamic tradition,
"in the cause of Allah"
(Fi Sabilillah)
refers to any righteous deed, charity, or struggle done purely for the sake of God to seek His pleasure. It encompasses supporting the faith, helping the poor, and self-improvement.
Key aspects include:
Charity: Spending one's wealth to help the needy and support community causes.
The Quran likens this to a seed that multiplies into hundreds of grains.
Struggle/Jihad:
The internal or external effort to defend the faith, seek knowledge, and establish justice.
Righteous Deeds:
Helping others and living a life of moral excellence.
