Depending on the context, this phrase forms the opening part of three major supplications:
1. The Opening Supplication of Prayer
(Dua Al-Istiftah / Sana)
This is recited silently at the very beginning of ritual prayer (Salat), immediately after the first takbeer
(Allahu Akbar) and before seeking refuge from Shaytan.
• Transliteration:
• Meaning:
"Glory is to You O Allah, and praise. Blessed is Your Name and Exalted is Your Majesty. There is none worthy of worship but You."
• Status:
It is a highly recommended Sunnah according to the Hanafi and Hanbali schools of thought.
2. The Expiation of a Gathering (Kafaratul Majlis)
This supplication is recited before standing up or leaving an assembly, meeting, or gathering.
It serves to wipe away any minor sins, idle talk, or mistakes made during that session.
• Transliteration:
• Meaning:
"O Allah, You are free from every imperfection; all praise is for You.
I testify that there is no true god except You,
I ask Your forgiveness and turn to You in repentance."
3. During Bowing (Ruku) and Prostration (Sujood)
The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ frequently recited a variation of this phrase while bowing and prostrating during his prayers.
• Transliteration:
Subhanaka Allahumma Rabbana wa bihamdika, Allahum-magh-fir li.
• Meaning:
"Exalted Are you O Allah our Lord, and by Your praise. O Allah! Forgive me."
