Meaning and Concept

Absolute Authority:

It refers to Allah's supreme power to overcome any opposition and his absolute control over all creation. No one can resist His will or escape His command.

The Subjugator of Tyrants:

Historically, scholars like Imam al-Ghazali explained that Al-Qahhar is the one who "breaks the back" of the powerful among His enemies, subduing oppressors and tyrants who think they are untouchable.

Differentiation from Al-Qahir:

While Al-Qahir means "The Irresistible,"

Al-Qahhar is an intensive form, signifying that He is constantly and completely overwhelming in His power.

Spiritual Control:

It also refers to Allah subduing the human soul (nafs) and its worldly desires.

Mentions in the Quran

The name Al-Qahhar appears 6 times in the Holy Quran, often paired with the name Al-Wahid (The One) to emphasize that true, singular power belongs only to Him.

"To whom belongs sovereignty this Day? To Allah, the One, the Prevailing (Al-Qahhar)"

 (Surah Ghafir 40:16).
