“Say, 'O My servants who have transgressed against themselves [by sinning], do not despair of the mercy of Allah. Indeed, Allah forgives all sins. Indeed, it is He who is the Forgiving, the Merciful.'”
(Surah Az-Zumar, 39:53).
Yes, sincere tawbah (repentance) and istighfar (seeking forgiveness) will erase all sins in Islam, including major ones.
Allah's mercy is vast, and the Quran emphasizes that He forgives all sins if a person turns to Him sincerely.
The 4 Conditions for Sincere Repentance
While istighfar usually refers to the verbal act of asking for forgiveness (e.g., saying "Astaghfirullah"), true tawbah requires a change of heart.
For major sins, scholars agree that a sincere repentance requires four conditions:
Immediate Cessation:
You must stop committing the sin right away.
True Remorse:
You must feel genuine regret and guilt in your heart for disobeying Allah.
Firm Intention:
You must resolve and make a firm commitment never to return to that sin in the future.
Restitution (If applicable):
If your major sin involved the rights of another person (e.g., stealing, backbiting, or slander), you must also make it right with them by apologizing, returning stolen property, or clearing their name.
What if You Fall Back into the Same Sin?
Islam recognizes human imperfection. If you sincerely repent but later fall back into the same major sin, your tawbah for the previous instance was still valid.
You must simply renew your repentance and seek forgiveness again every time you stumble.
The key is that your heart does not intentionally plan to keep repeating the sin when you repent.
A Note on the Gravest Sin
The only major sin that cannot be forgiven is shirk (associating partners with Allah), and that is only if a person dies without repenting from it.
As long as a person is alive and turns to Allah, even shirk can be forgiven.
The Power of Good Deeds
To wipe out the spiritual effects of major sins, the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ encouraged following up a bad deed with a good deed.
Acts of worship like performing wudu perfectly, regular daily prayers (salah), and giving charity help to erase past wrongs.
