SURAH AL FATIHAH ..

Primary Names Found in Authentic Hadiths

These core names are verified directly through prophetic narrations:

Al-Fatiha (الفاتحة) / Fatihat al-Kitab:

"The Opener" or "The Opening of the Book."

It holds this title because it is placed at the very head of the Qur'an and opens the ritual prayers.

Umm al-Qur'an (أمّ القرآن):

"The Mother of the Qur'an."

The term umm means origin or foundation, indicating that the chapter encompasses all the fundamental themes of the Qur'an.

Umm al-Kitab (أمُّ الكتاب):

 "The Mother of the Book."

Similar to the title above, it serves as a condensed macrocosm of the entire scripture.

As-Sab’ al-Mathani (السبع المثاني):

 "The Seven Oft-Repeated Verses."

It refers to its seven distinct verses being recited in every single unit (rak'ah) of daily prayer.

Names Highlighting Praise and Worship

These titles focus on the spiritual conversation and core relationship built between the servant and the Creator during prayer:

Al-Hamd (الحمد): "The Praise."

Named so because the text opens directly with the glorification of Allah (Al-hamdu lillahi Rabbil-'alamin).

As-Salah (الصّلاة): "The Prayer."

In a divine narration (Hadith Qudsi), Allah says,

"I have divided the prayer between Myself and My servant..."

referencing the recitation of Al-Fatihah as a core requirement for valid prayer.

Ad-Du'a (الدّعاء): "The Supplication."

Named for its concluding verses where the believer actively asks Allah for direct guidance along the straight path.

Ash-Shukr (الشكر): "The Gratitude."

It symbolizes the ultimate declaration of thankful appreciation to the Lord of the worlds.

Names Reflecting Healing and Protection

Several titles stem from accounts where companions used the surah to heal ailments:

Ash-Shifa (الشفاء) / Ash-Shafiyah:

 "The Cure" or "The Healing."

Verified by prophetic narrations noting its potency against physical and spiritual poisons.

Ar-Ruqyah (الرُّقية): "The Spiritual Remedy."

Originating from a historical incident where a companion successfully recited it over a tribal leader bitten by a scorpion to relieve his pain.

Al-Waqiyah (الواقية): "The Protection."

It acts as a spiritual shield for the believer who recites it.

Names Signifying Completeness and Foundation

These scholarly descriptors detail how the surah functions as a perfect standalone summary of Islamic theology:

Al-Asas (الأساس): "The Foundation."

Ibn Abbas reported that Al-Fatihah serves as the foundational root of the entire Qur'an.

Al-Kafiya (الكافية): "The Sufficient."

It is sufficient on its own during a prayer service, meaning a prayer is valid with it alone, whereas no other surah can replace it.

Al-Wafiya (الوافية): "The Complete" or "The Fulfillment."

Scholars note it must be recited in its entirety during worship and cannot be split into different segments across prayer units.

Al-Kanz (الكنز): "The Treasure."

It acts as an elite treasury of deep spiritual insights and core knowledge.
