DEEDS HEAVY ON THE SCALES ..

The phrase

"saqulat mawazinuh"

(ثَقُلَتْ مَوَازِينُهُ)

is a prominent Quranic expression that translates to "his scales are heavy"

or "whose scales are heavy

 [with good deeds]".

It refers directly to the Day of Judgment in Islamic theology, when a person's good deeds outweigh their bad deeds on the divine scales of justice.

Where It Appears in the Quran

This phrase

(or variations of it)

appears across multiple chapters of the Quran to contrast the ultimate fate of the righteous with that of the wrongdoers:

Surah Al-Qari'ah (101:6):

فَاَمَّا مَنْ ثَقُلَتْ مَوَازِينُهٗۙ فَهُوَ فِيْ عِيْشَةٍ رَّاضِيَةٍۗ
Meaning: "Then as for one whose scales are heavy, he will be in a pleasant life."

Surah Al-A'raf (7:8):

وَالْوَزْنُ يَوْمَئِذٍ الْحَقُّ ۚ فَمَنْ ثَقُلَتْ مَوَازِينُهُ فَأُولَٰئِكَ هُمُ الْمُفْلِحُونَ
Meaning: "And the weighing on that Day will be the truth. So those whose scales are heavy—it is they who will be the successful."

Surah Al-Mu'minun (23:102):

فَمَن ثَقُلَتْ مَوَازِينُهُ فَأُو۟لَٰٓئِكَ هُمُ ٱلْمُفْلِحُونَ
"Then those whose scales are heavy—it is they who are the successful."

Linguistic Breakdown

Saqulat (ثَقُلَتْ):

Became heavy / carries weight.

Mawazin (مَوَازِينُ):

The plural of Mizan (مِيزَان), which means "scales" or "balances" used for weighing.

Hu / Uhu (هُۥ):

The pronoun meaning "his" or "its".

Theological Context (Tafsir)

According to classic Islamic commentators like Ibn Kathir and Al-Tabari, the "heaviness" of the scale is achieved when a person's righteous deeds, sincere intentions, and faith outweigh their sins—even if only by a single good deed.

The Quran routinely contrasts this phrase with

“khaffat mawazinuh”

(whose scales are light),

which denotes a lack of good deeds and leads to spiritual ruin.

WALLAHU A'LAM ..
