THE VIRTUES OF SAYING 'BISMILLAH ..

In Islamic tradition, reciting Bismillah

(or the full phrase Bismillahir-Rahmanir-Rahim

—

"In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful")

is highly emphasized. Authentic Hadiths demonstrate that beginning any task with the name of Allah transforms an ordinary worldly action into a spiritually blessed deed.

Here are the key virtues and benefits of saying Bismillah as documented in authentic Hadith traditions:

1. Attaining Barakah

(Divine Blessing) and Completeness
Any meaningful task initiated without the remembrance of Allah is considered deficient.

• The Hadith:

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ stated that any important matter that does not begin with the remembrance of Allah or Basmalah remains cut off from blessings and is defective.

2. Protection from Shaytaan (Satan) during Meals

Saying Bismillah before eating prevents the devil from sharing or depleting the blessings of your sustenance.

• The Hadith:

'Umar bin Abu Salamah reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to him,

"Mention Allah's Name

(i.e., say Bismillah before starting eating), eat with your right hand, and eat from what is near you."

• If Forgotten:

If you forget to say it at the beginning, you should say:

 "Bismillahi awwalahu wa akhirahu"

(In the name of Allah at its beginning and its end).

• Depriving Satan:

In another narration from Sahih Muslim, the Prophet ﷺ noted that when a person mentions Allah's name upon entering his house or eating, Satan tells his followers, "You have no place to spend the night and no dinner"

3. Ultimate Protection When Leaving the House

Invoking Allah's name when stepping out into the world safeguards a Muslim against worldly and spiritual harms.

• The Hadith:

Anas bin Malik reported that the Prophet ﷺ said:

 "Whoever says

(upon leaving his house):

'Bismillah, tawakkaltu 'alallah, wa la hawla wa la quwwata illa billah'

 [I begin with the Name of Allah;

I trust in Allah; there is no altering of conditions but by the Power of Allah],

it will be said to him:

'You are guided, defended and protected.' The devil will go far away from him".

4. Relief and Healing from Physical Pain

The Basmalah is a key component of spiritual healing (Ruqyah).

• The Hadith:

The Prophet ﷺ instructed that when experiencing bodily pain, one should place their hand on the painful area and say "Bismillah" three times, followed by seven times reciting:

"A'udhu bi'izzatillahi wa qudratihi min sharri ma ajidu wa uhadhiru"

(I seek refuge in Allah and His power from the evil of what I find and of what I guard against).

5. Spiritual Shielding During Intimacy

Saying Bismillah before marital intimacy invites blessings on potential offspring.

• The Hadith:

The Prophet ﷺ taught that if a person says Bismillah before intimacy and asks for protection against Satan, any child born from that union will be permanently protected from the physical or spiritual harms of Satan.
